The Zend Framework, sponsored by Zend Technologies, is a comprehensive framework loaded with features. Currently at Version 1.11.2, it requires PHP 5.2.4 or later and makes full use of PHP 5′s object-oriented features.

Zend Technologies also produces the Zend Server PHP application server. And while Zend Server is not required for Zend Framework, running Zend Framework applications on the Zend Server provides substantial benefits. First, Zend Framework provides a Zend_Log writer that writes to the Zend Server’s monitor API, allowing you to use the Server’s log introspection feature for drilling into application issues. Also, the Framework includes a Zend Server-specific Zend_Cache back end for caching resource-intensive operations, such as database results, Web service calls, complex templates, and more.

Building software in a waterfall approach where there is a big milestone release at the end of the process, isn’t conducive to success in the modern world, according to top executives from the NYSE and GE.

Kerner joined the NYSE a week before a major new software platform was set to roll out, after two years of development and millions of dollars of investment. The platform never saw the light of day, as Kerner killed the effort as it didn’t meet expectations and instead set out to build a new platform using an agile iterative approach to releases.

Zend’s recent successes and partnerships with Microsoft, Rackspace and others may be signalling that open source programming language PHP is ready to take on Java in the enterprise market.

It’s been an interesting few months for Zend, the commercial company behind the open source programming language PHP.

In the past few weeks, Zend has teamed up with Rackspace, a leading web hosting provider. It’s also signed an agreement with Ibuildings, an Anglo-Dutch software consultancy company, to provide training and support services in the UK. And last year, Zend partnered with Microsoft, despite the software giant offering a competing platform.

A cexercise/>loser look at these partnerships suggests the company – and PHP itself – may be ready for the big time.
